What's Mean Faceting

Gem cutting is classified according to the hardness of gemstones as follows:

 01) Diamond Cutting

 02) Cutting of gemstones having about nine hardness in Moha Scale natural and synthetic gemstones such as Ruby and Sapphire.

 03) Cutting of gem stones having less than eight hardness in Moha Scale natural and synthetic gemstones such as topaz,agate,turquoise and other imitations

 Technical Terms Using In Gem Cutting Industry

  • Chipping – Rough Shaping by means of a special hammer or pliers.
  • Splitting – Rending the stones such as synthetic sapphire into two pieces along the splitting line.
  • Breaking – Rending the stones in to small pieces by use of special press.
  • Cleaving – Splitting or rending of the stones by use of cleaver’s knife applying to crystalline stones along the cleavage planes.
  • Carving – Shaping of the stones into pre – determined shapes use of tools such as diamond tools, steel tools, grinding stones etc.
  • Sawing – Shaping the stones from the rough into various shapes.

               o   Slabbing – to cut off the stones into plates.

               o   Trimming – to section the small rough stones or slabs into certain shapes or pieces.

  • Grinding – Shaping of the stones into pre – determined shapes use of tools such as diamond tools, steel tools, grinding stones etc.
  • Sanding – Smoothing the rough surface of the work piece by use of coated abrasives such as silicon carbide sandpaper, sanding cloths etc.
  • Polishing – Making a glossy surface of the work piece by use of laps or buffs with polishing agents.
  • Tumbling – Lapping and polishing of the stones by tumbling motion or tumbling motion with vibration in the barrel
  • Doping – Cementing of the stones on to the dipsticks by using of doping wax or glue.
  • Lapping – Finishing of the gem cutting by feeding abrasive and liquid on to the contact surface between work piece and lap materials such as iron, copper, Zinc or Tin.
